Life Lessons from Hanging with Horses

Aug 03, 2023

On most Saturdays, either my husband or I find ourselves out at the horse stables watching our daughter ride horses. They call her the little horse whisperer. She absolutely loves it. You can tell that it brings so much joy to her heart to hop on a horse and continue to grow in her horsemanship.

It got me thinking, what exactly can we learn from horses to apply to our everyday lives? I think these magical creatures are very intuitive, have a really good judge of character, have amazing abilities to read situations, communicate non-verbally, and make split-second decisions based on their instincts is truly remarkable. In this blog post, we will explore five valuable lessons we can learn from horses to be applied to our own lives.

1. Trusting Your Gut Feeling:

Horses rely heavily on their intuition to assess their surroundings and determine if they are safe or in danger. They teach us the importance of listening to our own gut feelings and instincts. I can’t tell you how many times in my life something has felt off, and I ignore all of the signs and end up kicking myself for not listening to my intuition.

2. The Eyes Tell the Story:

Horses are masters of non-verbal communication. They can convey their thoughts and emotions through a glance into their eyes. Have you ever truly looked into the eyes of a horse? It is like looking into their souls in a way. What if we took the time to look into someone’s eyes and tried to truly understand them without even saying a word. I often find that slowing down and looking into someone’s eyes says so much more than any words shared.

3. Embrace the Equine Zen:

If you spend any time around horses, you quickly learn they are keenly aware of their surroundings. They embrace the art of mindfulness and present-moment awareness. These beautiful animals have taught me to immerse myself in the beauty of nature and to be in the moment. It is also a tenant of meditation, the power of being in the present moment.

4. Stomp out the Fear:

Horses have a natural ability to build trust and form deep connections with humans. Have you ever tried to be present with a horse when you are full of fear? Good luck, they will sniff that out immediately. Horses are a perfect reminder that living in fear is no fun, and that trust is earned through consistent and honest interactions.

5. Run Wild like a Stallion:

Horses live life with freedom and authenticity. I think we often live life walking on eggshells trying to make everyone happy and end up feeling pretty empty and depleted. By letting go of societal expectations and allowing ourselves to be wild and free, we can lead more fulfilling lives.

If you are lucky enough to find yourself around a horse anytime soon, I hope you embrace their energy, let go of any fears you are carrying around and make a genuine connection. I hope you too can be a horse whisperer and let your authentic spirit run wild.

Love and light my friends!
